The hotfix resolves the issue where application would not start when the recent Microsoft Outlook update 2003 or 2004 would be installed.

Update addresses two recently discovered issues - history backups would not be limited and backups created would not accept password if it was used. It is recommended to get this update as soon as possible to avoid backup directories getting full.

Issues Fixed:

  • During history backup oldest backup file(s) would not be deleted if maximum backup file count is reached. This issue applies for all backups that were created starting from year 2020.
  • Password that is created using the "Backup Password" functionality would not be correctly saved on the backup PST File. This resulted in backups that cannot be opened.

Functional Changes:

  • 2 new command line utility parameters were added - "mergeconfig/%fullpath%" and "deleteconfig". "deleteconfig" allows deleting currently available configuraiton file. "mergeconfig" merges configuration parameters from a file in a specified full path.

  • New Feature - Backup password functionality. When enabled - all backup PST files will be password protected. Backup password is encrypted (AES).

New Safe PST Backup version has improved Folder Selection dialog, a new option to include / exclude new folders from backup and select/deselect folders for backup just with one click. Furthermore, couple new configuration parameters were introduced as well to fine tune the scope of each backup to specific folders only or even specific item type only.

Functional Updates

  • Added option to include or exclude the newly created folders from the backup (Backup new folders option) into the Folder Filter dialog.
  • Improved folder selection dialog – added the ability to Select / Deselect all folders at once.
  • New configuration parameter was introduced in this version – “FolderToBackup” – which is used when user wants to backup only the specific folders - this parameter overrides all other settings.
  • Also “FolderClassToBackup” which explicitly defines what folder type should be backed up only, disregarding all other settings.

September 6, 20172.64Major Update

This update focus is the bring 1 installation file for Enterprise and Free Editions to solve issues that are related to the user experience. Besides that, introducing couple functional updates and several bug fixes that came as requests from our clients.

Functional Updates

  • There are no separate installation packages for the Enterprise and Free Editions. From now on there is one installation file for Safe PST Backup product, where activated version acts as previous Enterprise Edition and not activated one as a Free Edition.
  • A backup retry logic improved and now when the backup has failed, we will retry performing backup. The parameters on how many times and in what periods of time can be specified in the configuration file RetryFailedBackup and RetryInterval parameters. By default, 1 retry in 5 minutes.
  • Admin Tool improvement - now we are displaying the count of workstations currently shown in the list. Count is updated if filters are applied.

Issues Fixed

Safe PST Backup Issues:

  • Safe PST Backup would fail to backup password protected files in case Outlook is closed.
  • When updating Free version via 4Team Updater, it would download Enterprise Edition instead.
  • Several cosmetic and low severity issues as well.

  • Could not perform backup in case there were 2 Outlook profiles configured via IMAP or Exchange.

This update addresses issues related to the offline license management in the Monitoring Module, as well as other various issues related to specific backup cases.

Issues Fixed

Safe PST Backup Issues:

  • In some scenarios duplicate listing of Outlook storage files would appear in the Options “Files and Folders” dialog.
  • Storage files and Outlook folders list loading speed has been improved in the “Files and Folders” dialog.
  • When the backup location was updated from an inaccessible network location to any local location on the drive, the backup process would still fail with the “Unsuitable network connection” error.
  • The backup would always fail when Offline network location was used as a backup location.
  • When the “DeleteDeletedPSTFiles” parameter was set to “True” and the original PST file was renamed, it’s backup copy was not renamed on the backup location.
  • In some scenarios when using the “SourcePath” location, when “unlinked” OST files have been found, the resulting status of the backup would be “Failed”, even if the actual backup was successful.
  • The “FileNameFilter” parameter was not working in case specific characters were used, for example the “&” symbol.
  • Windows 8 was reported in the log file instead of Windows 10.

June 21, 20162.61Major Update

This update resolves the issue with failure to read storage files after the latest Microsoft Outlook 2016 update. Some other have also been fixed.

Issues Fixed

Safe PST Backup Issues:

  • Application would fail to read Outlook Storage files causing backup failures and Options dialog not showing storage files in the “Files and Folders” tab after the latest Microsoft Outlook 2016 updates (Enterprise edition only).
  • In some cases, automatic backup schedule settings would not show correctly in the Options dialog for Daily, Weekly and Monthly settings.
  • The command prompt tool spbCmdRun.exe was crashing in some cases.
  • The option to switch off the attempt to start backup automatically after it was missed (“AttemptBackupWhenMissed” tag) was working in the Free edition.

April 14, 20162.60Major Update

This version introduces new functionality to automatically run backup if it was missed and fixes related to IMAP and password protected storage files.

Functional Updates

  • Backup is automatically performed now if the scheduled time was missed. Now in the case when backup was missed at the scheduled time with daily, weekly or monthly settings, due to the application not running or computer shut down during that time, it will be performed once the application starts. The new parameter - <attemptbackupwhenmissed> - can now be used in the configuration file to disable this functionality when needed.

Issues Fixed

Safe PST Backup Issues:

  • In some scenarios the application would crash or backup would fail during the backup of IMAP account type storage file.
  • When backup was configured for password protected files, in some cases a new backup file was created after each backup attempt if Outlook was restarted, resulting in multiplication of backup files in the backup location.
  • In some scenarios, if backup was configured for Exchange account type storage file, an error would be logged in the error log file stating that the file had changed since the last running of Microsoft Outlook.

Admin Tool issues:

  • In some scenarios, the activation of clients would fail stating that there were no available licenses, although the Admin Tool would show that not all licenses were used.
  • When clicking “Get Status Now” for multiple selected devices in Admin Tool, the “Unhandled exception” error would be displayed.

March 18, 20162.53Major Update

The latest Safe PST Backup includes some functional updates such as connection test process improvement. Also, a number of issues have been fixed in this release, particularly to improve working with PST files.

Functional Updates

  • Connection test process improved. Some functional updates have been made to connection test to improve the detection of low network connection in some specific scenarios.
  • Username added to the log files name. Now all log file names have Windows username as well, for better identification.

Issues Fixed

Safe PST Backup Issues:

  • An issue related to database locking has been fixed, which in some scenarios may have been the reason of failing or never ending backup.
  • The issue when the “Unknown Publisher” warning was shown after download due to an old unsupported digital certificate in installation files has been fixed.

Many various issues have been fixed in this release, including some related to Safe PST Backup client application communication with Monitoring Module.

Functional Updates

  • Ability to test the configured SMTP server in Admin Tool. Now the SMTP server settings can be tested from Admin Tool in order to make sure the email reports would be sent without issues.

Issues Fixed

Safe PST Backup Issues:

  • The next automatic backup date in some cases would be incorrectly set to the previous year.
  • By default, if the destination folder was not available during the backup attempt, the application would check its availability constantly without limit, not 3 times only, as was stated in “DestinationFolderCheck” parameter description.
  • When a history backup file was created, an incorrect date and time was used for its naming – the latest backup time instead of the actual backup time related to the file.
  • The application would not start in case the location configured in “DetailLogPath” parameter was not valid.
  • The application would close unexpectedly in case multiple profiles were configured and some of them contain no valid backup destination location.

Admin Tool issues:

  • In some scenarios, when Administration Tool was started, it would show some devices as “Offline” with an incorrect last backup status.
  • The device statuses were not shown as “Online” instantly after activation of Monitoring Service.
  • Monitoring Module sent several copies of the same report in case of a failed backup.
  • If Admin Tool was running, it would crash during restart / shut down of the computer.
  • In case the backup was never yet performed for the workstation, the date 1/1/0001 would be sent by Monitoring Service in the email report.
  • The "Cancel" button in the "Add Server" dialog in Admin Tool was not closing it in some cases.
  • Some minor issues have been fixed in the Admin Tool interface.

December 23, 20152.51Major Update

This update supports the latest Microsoft Outlook 2016 version. Also, a number of issues have been addressed, related to a large files first backup process.

Functional Updates

  • Full support of the latest version of Microsoft Outlook 2016. All issues and crashes related to Outlook 2016 version have been eliminated.

Issues Fixed

Safe PST Backup Issues:

  • Backup files were duplicating constantly in backup location in some configuration scenarios when the “SourcePath” parameter was used.
  • In some scenarios when Windows Shadow Copy service was used to make the first backup, it would constantly fail, creating “.corrupted” files in backup location.
  • Backup was failing on password-protected PST files when Outlook was closed.
  • If first backup of password-protected PST file was performed when Outlook was running, the next backup, with Outlook closed, would fail without asking the password.
  • In case the “CreatePST” parameter was set to False, the file with “.corrupted” extension was created after each backup of the new Outlook data file.
  • The next scheduled backup date was shown incorrectly in some cases when the “Daily” or “Weekly” parameter value was provided in the configuration file without actual time.
  • With the Profile Management mode enabled, the new profiles created in Profiles Management panel were not saved in some cases.
  • When using more than one backup profile (when Profile Management mode is enabled), only the first profile backup was performed.
  • If “&” symbol was used in profile name, all configuration file settings were replaced by empty default settings.
  • When the “UseMonitoringServiceActivation” parameter was used, the client switched to the “administration” mode.
  • When email reports to administrator about some backup failures were disabled with the “FailuresLimit” parameter set to “0”, they were sent anyway.
  • With the “DestinationFolderCheckInterval” parameter set to “0”, the check was not disabled and was performed constantly instead.
  • It was possible to open Outlook Folder selection dialog in the Free edition.
  • When trying to open the application from “Start” or desktop shortcut when the application is already running, the main window could be shown even when the “HideGUI” parameter was set to “True”.
  • Automatic truncation of error logs has been implemented correctly with the “TrancateLogsTo” parameter.
  • The Help button for “Profile Management” would open an incorrect web help link.

Admin Tool issues:

  • After client deactivation using Admin Tool, it was instantly re-activating.
  • The “Unhandled exception” error was shown by Admin Tool if it was still running when logging off from Windows.
  • The “Unhandled exception” error was shown when trying to active the client from Admin Tool when no connection is available.

July 20, 20152.50Major Update

This new release supports new improved activation methods for client computers from Admin Tool. Also, a number of issues reported by our customers have been addressed in this new build. And a number of Monitoring Service and Admin Tool issues have been fixed.

Functional Updates

  • Improved offline activation support from Admin Tool. Admin Tool now supports offline client licenses activation and improved licenses management.
  • The ability to merge the same storage files into one backup file has been added. If the storage file name was the same as the backup storage file, a new backup file was always created. Now with the help of “MergeDestinationFiles” parameter files with the same name may be linked to the same backup file, if needed.
  • Supports new Microsoft Windows 10 and Office 2016 Preview.
  • Italian web help has been added.

Issues Fixed

Safe PST Backup Issues:

  • Folder path without exact configuration file name was not working when used in the “ConfigPath” parameter.
  • Application would crash in some cases on systems with Outlook 2010 when trying to open folder selection dialog in “Files and Folders” tab in Settings for IMAP type storage files.
  • Backup could not be started using the command line parameter “start”.
  • Command line help text was showing incorrectly.
  • The log file size would increase dramatically with incorrect errors in case there was apostrophe symbol in the profile name.

Admin Tool issues:

  • In some cases, the search box in Admin Tool would not allow entering any text to filter the devices list.
  • We have fixed some issues related to the functionality of options in the right-click menu in Admin Tool when multiple devices are selected.
  • Some navigational issues with Monitoring Service installation fixed.
  • In some cases, when switching from one Monitoring Service to another in “Service Connections” settings in Admin Tool, an error would show when clicking on the “Service Settings” button.
  • When Monitoring Service connection settings were removed from the “Service Connections” settings in Admin Tool, the main dialog would continue to show the “Connected” status for the service and errors would be generated in some scenarios in this case.
  • If there’s no network connection with Monitoring Service, an error was shown in the “Service Settings” dialog in Admin Tool.
  • In some cases Admin Tool would still show clients with the “online” status after Monitoring Service is stopped.

August 5, 20142.40Major Update

This update includes support of multiple backup profiles that allow setting up different PST file backup settings with different backup locations. Also a number of issues were addressed in this build.

Functional Updates

  • Support of multiple backup profiles. Now product may be configured with multiple backup profiles, which allows setting up different backup schedules for different storage files to different backup locations (Enterprise edition only). Profiles can be managed with additional profile management dialog which can be enabled for user from the configuration file. The same management is also available from Administration Tool.

Issues Fixed

  • In some cases after backup of certain OST or PST files Outlook rules and categories related to these storage files were corrupted, deleted.
  • In some scenarios storage files configured for backup would become corrupted when Shadow Copy service was used during the first backup.
  • When running next backup right after the previous one has just finished, in some cases backup would fail on the 2nd or 3rd attempt.
  • When changing backup size limit setting to smaller value than already used size on the backup location, in some scenarios new backup file would not be created any more.
  • “Unidentified” machines could not be removed from the list in the Admin Tool.
  • In some use cases Admin Tool would generate “Unhandled exception” error when trying to access History Backup settings dialog of the selected workstation.
  • Email accounts with two-letter domain extension could not be added to Admin Tool notification email settings.

April 9, 20142.30Major Update

This update offers new functionality to determine the type and speed of connection with the backup destination source. It also includes many fixes and updates.

Functional Updates

  • Automatic connection type and speed detection. Now before starting the backup process, the type and speed of connection is tested, if the backup location is on the network. Additional options allow you tochoose whether the backup should start or not, regarding the connection type detected.
  • Available disk space detection on the backup location. An additional new parameter has been added tocheck for the free disk space available on the backup location. The backup will not start if less free space than needed is available (Enterprise Edition only).
  • Support of Italian language has been added.
  • The free product version now also uses Windows Shadow Copy service when it’s possible to fasten the first PST file backup.
  • Tested with Windows 8.1.

Issues Fixed

  • The issue with IMAP storage files (OST files) on Outlook 2013 not being detected and backed up is fixed.
  • If the backup file is locked or corrupted, a new backup file was created after each backup attempt.
  • When limitation for a new backup file was set to one file, the backup process would restart instantly.
  • Files created with Exchange Active Sync account were still visible when the “Show Exchange Folders in the list” checkbox was unchecked.
  • In some cases the backup failed every other time if it started when Outlook was open.
  • The parameter was mistakenly removed from the client configuration file when settings were modified through the Administration Tool.
  • The parameter was not working in some scenarios leading to backup failure for password protected files.
  • In case of several PST files listed in the “Files and Folders” dialog, one of them being with a password, that password protected PST file would show the list of folders from another unprotected PST file instead.
  • In some cases the backup report would show incorrect numbers of backed up items in the log.
  • The product icon quality shown on Windows Desktop has been improved.
  • Some minor interface issues fixed on non-English versions.

February 26, 20132.20Major Update

This update introduces a new feature to speed up the first backup process in the Enterprise edition using the Windows Shadow Copy service. The product has also been translated into German, French and Spanish languages. It also includes other small functional updates and bug fixes.

Functional Updates
  • Increase the first backup speed by using Windows Shadow Copy. To increase the speed of the first backup of large PST files, an additional option can be enabled to copy the file using the Windows Shadow Copy service whenever possible (Enterprise edition only).
  • Support of German, French and Spanish languages has been added.
  • Ability to edit the backup schedule settings remotely has been added to Administration Module (Enterprise edition with Administration Tool only).
  • Tested on Windows 8 and Outlook 2013.
Issues Fixed
  • The hidden Outlook folder used by application to identify the correct file for backup was visible in the folder selection dialog for Exchange type accounts (OST files).
  • In some cases, an exception would appear on the screen when trying to import the computer list from Active Directory in Admin Tool.
  • Admin Tool didn’t allow entering the SMTP server address with domain extension having less than 3 symbols.

This update includes new features – keeping the backup history – several full backup copies, backup retention options. Also, some improvements are made related to the product stability and performance.

Functional Updates
  • History backup. Now you can set up an additional schedule when a new full backup copy is to be created, allowing you to create several full backup restore points.
  • Backup retention. You can set up how many previous backup copies to keep and how much disk space all backup files should use.
  • Suspend backup option. Backup according to schedule can now be suspended from the right-click menu of the icon in the system notification area, in case you are on a slow network connection, or you just dont need the application to perform a backup for some time.
  • Improved support of the remote configuration file. When the remote configuration file is not available, the application now uses a cached configuration file.
  • Improvements for activation scenarios are added. Additional methods have been implemented to support offline activation scenarios.
Issues Fixed
  • In some scenarios, after restoring the password protected PST file from backup each time the backup was performed, a new PST file was created in the backup location.
  • In some scenarios, the list of Outlook folders was not shown in the Outlook Data Backup Settings dialog.
  • The installation would not offer to install .NET Framework 3.5 required for the application to run, or offered .NET 2.0 instead.

Issues Fixed:
  • Backup would not start according to scheduled time after several days of use in some cases when daily, weekly or monthly schedule is set.
  • At some moments next scheduled backup was shown for January 1st 2050, if duplicate time entries were set in the daily or weekly schedule settings.

This is a major update of the product with support of the new Administration and Monitoring Module, new scheduling options and performance improvements.

Functional Updates:
  • Monitor and manage the backup process on multiple workstations from one place. Administration and Monitoring Module is now created additionally to manage and monitor the backup process for a group of workstations.
  • New scheduling options have been added. Now more advanced scheduling options are added to support daily, weekly and monthly scheduling.
  • Some improvements in logic when dealing with failed files or items in Outlook folder have been added.
  • Support of Outlook 2000 has been added. Now the full file copy method works with systems where Outlook 2000 is installed.
  • The ability to always create a new full file copy as backup has been added. An option to always create a new copy of the file during backup is added, if the file copy method is used.
Issues Fixed:
  • Backup status was not shown as failed if at least one PST file was backed up successfully.
  • OST files would be skipped and not backed up in some scenarios when the SOURCEPATH parameter was used for scanning folders for PST and OST files.
  • The copy method during the first backup would not be applied to PST files that are located in the sub-folders.
  • In some scenarios when restoring a PST file from the backup location, further backup attempts into the same location would fail for that file until the backup file is removed manually from the backup location.
  • Some issues fixed for scenarios when computer came back from sleep or hibernation mode.
  • Some issues with configuration file parameters not being read correctly due to a different file structure are fixed.
  • If the PST file was copied as a full file during the first backup, an incorrect item number was reported in the log file statistics.
  • Backup files are now excluded from the Windows Search indexing service in order to avoid performance issues during the backup.
  • In some scenarios the unexpected network error message was logged into the log file when there was actually no error and the backup was performed normally.
  • When using command line to start the backup, it would not start in some scenarios.
  • Command line dialog warnings were appearing during the installation.
  • In some scenarios when backup is in progress and there was an attempt to close the application, it would not exit and the process would remain in Windows processes for a long time.
